New to ISU: Mattea Garcia


Dr. Mattea Garcia is another fine addition to Indiana State Universities Department of Communication. Hailing originally from Burbank, Il a south-side suburb of Chicago. Garcia received her B.A. in Creative Writing and English Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.She also received her M.A. and Ph.D in Communication from U of I. Her dissertation entitled "Ask a Librarian: The profession, professional identities, and constitutive rhetoric of librarians" which examined how librarians make sense of their work as professionals and focused how they react in the face of stereotypes and misconceptions many may have of librarians. Garcia enjoys her colleagues in the Communication Department, though she would love to find true Chicago style pizza in Terre Haute. On behalf of Sycamore Video, we'd like to welcome Dr. Garcia to Indiana State.

New to ISU: Shana Kopaczewski


Dr. Shana Kopaczewski is a recent addition to the Department of Communication. She was born and raised in Wisconsin, but she comes to ISU from Southern Connecticut University in New Haven CT. She got her PhD from the University of Iowa where her doctoral dissertation explored impression management on a website created for online daters, with particular emphasis on how participants negotiated a potentially stigmatized identity. Her primary areas of specialization are human and cultural communication, but most recently she has focused her research on aspects of social media.

Sycamore Video Graduate: Ronald Short's Film Premiere








Billi & Theodore, is a feature length dramatic comedy. It will have its first public screening of a rough cut of the film in Indianapolise, IN on Saturday night, September 24th at midnight, with Q&A to follow. This film showcases Hoosier talent as well as many beautiful Indiana locations. Money raised from ticket sales will help fund film festival submissions and distribution.


The plot of the film follows aspiring puppeteer Billi who joins her long lost best friend Theodore on a road trip to retrieve the remnants of his broken relationship. Fate, mixed with a little bad luck, gives them the opportunity to rekindle what they once had. It was filmed in Indianapolis, Avon, Bloomington, Greenwood, Michigan City, and Martinsville, Indiana. The film is written and directed by Ronald Short and stars Jordan McRae (Spy Kids 4D), Travis Emery (Transmorfers), Tommy Martin (Reverie), Kristine Renee Farley (The Creepy Doll), Chris Curtis (A Time for the Heart), Suzanna Hartzell-Baird (The Big Idea), Joseph Poenisch, and Zachary Finch.


Short Pictures Independent, LLC is a motion picture production company focusing on developing and producing independent films providing a new perspective on everyday lives through artistic portrayals with an authentic voice. Indiana native, Ronald Short, the owner and operator of SPI Productions, has produced many award winning short films, public service announcements, and music videos; some of which received awards from the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters. Billi & Theodore is his first feature length film. Short Pictures Independent is currently located out of Austin, Texas.

Political Science Students Meet At Wolf Field For BBQ



The Political Science Department recently held a BBQ for students and faculty. They congregated and cooked burgers, hot-dogs, and veggie burgers. While eating they discussed political issues and the upcoming year at ISU.

Library Extravaganza












The annual Library Extravaganza took place on Thursday, Sept. 15. Students were able to enjoy free popcorn, pizza and soda while a live band played outside. Inside they learned about the Library's resources as well other campus services.

Sycamore Video Graduate: Caitlin Spaulding








ISU and Sycamore Video graduate Caitlin Spaulding completed her internship at Country Music Television in Nashville, Tennessee last summer. Recently she was given a full-time position working at CMT, where she has already produced a country music video. We were fortunate enough to have Caitlin snap the photographs featured above of the production studio at CMT, giving us a glimpse of what it is like to work in a professional environment. The staff at Sycamore Video appreciates all of the hard work she put into our blog during her time at ISU, and we wish her the best of luck in her new and exciting career!

Sycamore Snapshots- 9/14/11



Many students were frightened this morning at around 10:30am when a bat showed up and decided to take a nap hanging from the ceiling on the 9th floor of Sandison Hall. Students were afraid to pass under it, fearing it would attack. To their surprise, it stayed silent. The bat has been hiding on the 9th floor since the beginning of school.

Suicide Prevention Night







Students and staff attended an event in Cunningham Memorial Library on Sept. 8th, which brought awareness to the increase in depression and suicide in college students. The Student Counseling Center sponsored the event and provided snacks and beverages for those present. The event started with the film "The Truth About Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College". Afterward a discussion was held.

Sycamore Snapshots- 9/11/11




ISU students gathered around the fountain on the night of September 11th to honor those who passed away on that tragic day in 2001. Each student was given a candle for the vigil, which then led to a silent walk around campus to conclude the event.

The Blues Festival was held in downtown Terre Haute, which took place last Friday and Saturday. Both ISU students and people from the Wabash Valley gathered to listen to musicians, drink, socialize, and have fun at this lively festival.

ISUCON




ISU students gathered last Friday and Saturday to celebrate their favorite video games during the first ISUCON, a play off of the annual comic convention Comic-Con. During the event, students were able to participate in role-playing, battles, and board games. There was also a store where students could buy their favorite action and simulation games.
