Sycamore Video Abroad: Jacob Church Part 2

Nǐ hǎo everyone! This is Jacob Church, General Manager of Sycamore Video. Between the days of May 10th to May 28th I was filming a video for ISU Political/Environmental Science and Economics Departments in China. We started our trip in Shanghai and ended in Beijing. While studying abroad I witnessed many wonderful things I wanted to share with you during my stay in China, but I was unable to log onto our blog due to China's restrictions on micro-blogging. But since I am back in the USA I wanted to share some of the photos I took while spending time in such a beautiful and amazing country.

This is an authentic Chinese market near the Three Gorges area.

The White Amber City also located in the Three Gorges area.

This is a beautiful dragon statue I saw within the White Amber City. In Chinese culture, the dragon represents men and royalty. I saw many dragon statues during my trip.

This is a picture I took of classic Chinese architecture at the North Tomb located near Shenyang.

The emperor's throne also located in the North Tomb.

I hope you enjoyed the photos I took, I still need to sort through quite a bit so be on the look out for more photographs from my journey in China in the near future. Zài jiàn!

Professional Bytes: Molly Cummings

Hi, I'm Molly Cummings! I was a cyber journalist in Sycamore Video for two years. I now work as a News Producer at NBC-2 and WAWV in Terre Haute. I produce two nightly newscasts. Those are NBC-2 News At 11 and WAWV News First At Ten. Basically, while I take on many tasks throughout the work day, the main things I do are decide what is included in my newscasts and time the shows.

It's my job to decide what stories will air during my newscasts and decide for each story if there will be video, sound, graphics, full screens, and how long each story should be. I also help brainstorm for ideas at the beginning of each day and must be on the look out for any new stories that may develop throughout the night. During the shows, I join the production crew in making sure the stories air as planned. Also during the newscasts, it's my job to "time" the show. This means I have to make sure we hit things like live-shots on time and make sure that the show ends on time. To do this, I may have to add or drop things from the show as needed. Sometimes during the day, I may also take on other duties if need be, such as writing stories and editing video

Professional tip: A tip I have for people entering a variety of fields, especially the field of television news, is to try to get experience in many different areas. I think it's good when you can bring extra skills to the table, even if they aren't part of your everyday job. This shows that you can help out if extra help is needed, which is something that the people you work with will most likely really appreciate. It's also important to get experience in other areas because if you can understand how other jobs work in your workplace, you can better work as a team. I think being able to work in a team is very important, regardless of what career you pursue.

Professional Bytes: Caitlin Spaulding

Howdy from Nashville! I'm Caitlin Spaulding. Many of you may remember me from my work at Sycamore Video.  After graduating from ISU, I landed a position working as a Post-Production Assistant/Coordinator at CMT (Country Music Television) in Nashville, Tennessee.  This basically means I am the liaison between CMT Post and the producers, editors, and other clients.

My job is to handle the requests for encoding, duplication, digitizing, closed captioning, and other client services as well as handle any problems that may arise.   I am also in charge of purchasing tape stock and other office supplies that are needed for the department and reconciling our MasterCard every month. I pretty much try to help the department run as smoothly as possible.

Professional Tip:

As I am gaining experience in the professional field, I am learning that you need to be flexible.  There have been many times when people have expressed how much they appreciate me being flexible and working with them to make things happen.  Whether it be flexible with work hours, taking a half day instead of a full day off, or rearranging your schedule so that something that came in last minute can get done, it shows that you are willing to do what it takes to get the job done and employers respect that.

Greek Beat: Pi Kappa Alpha's Rent-A-Pike

Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity held Rent-A-Pike on February 2, 2012. This event was held in Dede 1 to raise money for Relay for Life. The members of Pike auctioned themselves off for four hours of community service to the highest bidder. Things like cleaning dorm rooms, doing laundry, and washing cars are just some popular chores that bidders ask the men to do. It’s a fun way to raise money for a good cause, and Pi Kappa Alpha raised a total of $1500 dollars for Relay For Life.
